ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif advised President Mamnoon Hussain to remit the sentences of convicts, imprisoned for various crimes, on the occasion of Eidul Fitr.
The president would grant these remissions in pursuance of the approved policy, in exercise of his powers under Article 45 of the Constitution that provides for special remissions in sentences on the occasions of Eidul Fitr, Eid Milad-un-Nabi, Pakistan Day and Independence Day. The remission, however, would not be admissible for those convicted for murder, espionage, anti-state activities, sectarianism, adultery, robbery, dacoity, kidnapping/abduction, and terrorist acts.
The president granted 90-day remission to the prisoners convicted for life imprisonment. The prime minister advised the president for remission of 45 days of sentence of all other convicts except the condemned prisoners and those convicted of murder, espionage, subversion, anti-state activities, terrorist act, adultery, kidnapping/abduction, robbery, dacoity and those undergoing sentence under the Foreigners Act 1946.
The special remissions will be admissible only if the convicts have undergone two-third of their substantive sentence of imprisonment.
PM Nawaz also advised the President for total remission to male prisoners who are 65 years of age or above and to female prisoners who are 60 years of age or above, and have undergone at least one-third of their substantive sentence except those who were involved in culpable homicide or in terrorist acts.
The president has also been advised to grant special remission of one year to the female prisoners who have been accompanying children and are serving sentence of imprisonment for crimes other than culpable homicide and terrorist acts. The prime minister also advised for grant of total remission to juvenile convicts of under 18 years of age who have served one-third of their substantive sentence except those involve in culpable homicide, terrorist act, adultery, robbery, dacoity and kidnapping or abduction.
