KARACHI: A policeman who allegedly assaulted elderly citizen Gokal Das in Ghotki district of Sindh for what he believed ‘violation’ of the Ramazan Ordinance was arrested, a private TV channel quoted Pakistan People’s Party leader Bakhtawar Bhutto as saying.
On Friday, the 90-year-old Hindu citizen was allegedly beaten by Mir Hussain Hydrani, a police constable, for eating rice outside his home at 6:30pm, 40 minutes before Iftar. A photo of Das showing his blooded hand went viral on Twitter. The shocking incident caused outrage on the micro-blogging website and there were demands for the arrest of the accused.
On Saturday, Bakhtawar announced that the policeman was arrested. A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered in Jarwar Police Station under Sections 337, 504 and 506/2 of the Pakistan Penal Code against the policeman for assaulting the senior citizen. Vindod Kumar, grandson of the victim, is the complainant in the case.
As the pictures of Das showing his torture marks went viral on social media, Inspector General of Sindh Police AD Khawaja ordered that justice must be served to the senior citizen. Rights activists including Hindu Sudhar Sabha president Amarnath Randhawa demanded an exemplary punishment for the policeman.
